What is an Essay?

‘Essay’ dictionary meaning is “a piece of writing usually short, on any one subject”. Essays are nothing but personal records of an impression of the essayist.
A short essay generally consists of around 500 words and tests the essayist on the understanding of the topic, sense of precision, and lucidity of the language. To be a skillful writer one needs to be a good reader and should have the ability to understand the topic.

Classification of Essays

1. Descriptive Essay: Generally describes some persons, place, or things. It can also be a description of someone we met or any object we saw. Ex: Towns, Monuments, etc.
2. Narrative Essay: are narration about some event or series of events. In this type of essay, the subject is the “Event” itself and the essay should be in and around the same. Ex: Historical Events, Biographies, Real stories or events like the World Cup or any important event
3. Reflective Essays: are a reflection of an idea or a thought or a subject. Here the topics are generally abstract like habits, politics, socio-political, poverty, education, etc.
4. Imaginary Essays: Generally on subjects such as feeling and expression. Or something like “what if you become the Chief Minister”, something that the user had not experienced like “ The Autobiography of a Pen”

Structure Of The Essay

1. Introduction
2. Body and
3. Conclusion

Introduction:

1. Most Vital Part of the essay
2. Reflects the whole idea of the topic
3. All parts of the body should be logically incorporated in the Introduction

Body:

1. Points discussed in the introduction should be discussed in brief here
2. Good scope to show the skills of writing here
3. Paragraphs containing the body should be in sync I.e.; should be connected to each other.

Conclusion:

1. The most important part is not to repeat the points.
2. Points covered in the body should not be repeated
3. Points should be suggestive in nature
4. A conclusion should give an impression that is natural and inevitable, like finishing touch

Essentials of an Essay

Relevancy:

• Always stick to the subject, whatever is not directly linked to the subject should be omitted.
• Remember the quality of the essay matters, not the quantity
• Always keep in mind the targeted audience who will read the essay.
• Never use a word which you are not sure of the meaning
• Things that are remotely connected to an essay can be used but only to build the interest of the reader or else should be omitted

Proportion:

• Different portions of the essay should be given the same preference
• For example, a big introduction with a very small body is not called for.
• Like if the topic is education, divide it into three parts Moral, Physical and intellectual

Coherence:

• The idea must succeed in a logical sequence so that the connection between the different ideas must be made absolutely clear.

Important Points to Remember

• Focus on the topic and do not include points not related to the topic.
• Do not repeat the lines or the same expression.
• Avoid using two ideas in the same paragraph.
• Always complete the sentence.
